Thirdson Construction choose Earth Friendly Concrete® by Wagners - Jan 25 2022

Thirdson Construction are committed to a sustainable future that is why they selected Earth Friendly Concrete® by Wagners (EFC®) for a residential project to eliminate over 29 tonnes of embodied carbon from the building. This saving is the equivalent to running a residential house for four and half years.

For this renovation in the suburb of Toowong, Brisbane over 117 m3 of Earth Friendly Concrete ® was used for footings, block fill and structural sections. Turning this original, character filled, weatherboard home into a modern and green beauty.

Earth Friendly Concrete® by Wagners is an ultra-low carbon concrete and is much more sustainable than ordinary concrete. It reduces embodied carbon by around 70% saving 250kg of CO2 per cubic metre poured. It is made from a binder consisting of industrial waste products, ground granulated blast furnace slag and pulverised fly ash and contains no Cement.

This makes a huge positive impact as the built environment is is a major contributor to global carbon emissions, with cement responsible for an estimated eight per cent of annual global emissions.

Remarkably, though the engineering properties of Earth Friendly Concrete® are the same, and in many ways, better than conventional concrete. Advantages include improved durability, lower shrinkage, higher tensile strength and increased fire resistance compared with ordinary concrete.

Thirsdon Construction specialises in creating unique and sustainable homes by maximising the use of local, eco-friendly materials that reduce the carbon footprint.

Thirdson Construction Director, David James said, “We believe sustainability is very important and that is why we used Wagners EFC® on this project. It is one of the only products on the market not to use cement, which drastically reduces embodied carbon. Our experience working with Wagners has been great, they helped us create a new product that we used as a structural support for an existing retaining wall, and we look forward to using EFC® in future projects. We strive to be sustainable in our practices and make building a rewarding experience for our valued clients.”

Wagners EFC® General Manager, Jason Zafiriadis said, “The construction sector is a significant emitter of carbon, and we need to look at low carbon alternatives to traditional building materials. We produce an ultra-low carbon concrete that can accelerate decarbonisation. Earth Friendly Concrete® by wagners can reduce the carbon footprint in the construction industry and has genuine environmental benefits. It is great to see our technically superior product used for residential projects, delivering sustainable alternatives for builders and their clients. It is another great example of how our EFC® technology can be used to create a more sustainable future.”
