About the project

Millmerran Power Station is a baseload coal-fired generator on Queensland’s Darling Downs, supplying electricity into the National Electricity Market. It runs on coal, burning around 3.6 million tonnes a year, supplied by the New Acland Mine, 120km north. The station’s generation capacity and fuel output depend upon a sustained, reliable coal supply.

Wagners was engaged to provide a reliable daily haulage operation between the two sites during a holiday period – one of the most challenging times of the year.

The challenge

Heading into the Christmas operating window, Millmerran Power Station needed to maintain coal supply during a period of sustained high generation demand, when much of the logistics sector would be stood down or running on skeleton crews.

With 60,000 tonnes to move and a tight timeframe, there was no margin for fleet shortfalls or coordination failures.

The solution

Wagners was engaged to provide continuous loading, transport and delivery operations, managing the full haulage cycle through close collaboration with site teams at both New Acland and the power station. To meet the daily tonnage target within the available operating window, we deployed a quad trailer road train fleet to transport a high volume of coal per trip – up to 2,000 tonnes – and reduce the number of truck movements through loadout and unloading at either end.

The project was sustained by our committed workforce of long-term drivers. Rather than stretching the capacity of a small crew, we rostered a larger team to manage the hours and demanding turnaround times without compromising on safety or pace.

The project included:

  • Active fatigue and safety management throughout, with a schedule designed to keep crews safe
  • Direct coordination with loadout crews at New Acland and unloading crews at Millmerran, maintaining efficiency to support energy production for the region.
